Energy production and its use are currently responsible for 75% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. The transition to clean energy is an obligatory condition for achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and a significant opportunity for economic growth.

Supporting the transition to a decarbonized economy


The EU is determined to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to become climate neutral by 2050. In December 2020, the European Council approved a target to reduce EU net emissions by at least 55% compared to 1990 levels by 2030, which is a necessary intermediate step to achieve the goal by 2050.

Through the Energy Efficiency Directive, the EU has introduced measures to improve energy savings through more efficient use of energy resources.

The aim of the Renewable Energy Directive is to increase the share of energy from renewable sources in the EU economy. The current target set in the 2030 directive is 32%. The aim of the revised Commission proposal is to achieve at least a 40% share of renewable energy in the EU energy market by 2030. 

Photovoltaics is a field of technology that deals with the process of direct conversion of light into electrical energy. That name comes from the word photo (light) and volt (unit of electrical voltage). The conversion process takes place in a photovoltaic cell.
